How nicotine-free tobacco is created
Nicotine is not artificially added during the production of industrial cigarettes. But can it be removed? At TU Dortmund University, researchers spent years studying this question intensively. In the end, they succeeded in cultivating a tobacco plant that contained only 0.04 milligrams instead of the usual 16 milligrams per 100 g.
To do this, the tobacco plant was first treated with a bacterial solution containing a so-called gene scissor. The gene scissor cuts the genes in the plant that are responsible for the formation of nicotine.
Nicotine-free cigarettes like the ones grown in the Dortmund university lab are not yet commercially available. One reason is that the use of gene scissors is currently not permitted in Europe. If that changes in the future, the tobacco industry could open up an entirely new market. For people who want to move away from smoking, nicotine-free cigarettes would be an interesting option.
