THC oil – what is it, exactly? Have you ever wondered what all the different oils made from the cannabis plant are about? Alongside THC oil, there is cannabis oil, hash oil, hemp oil and CBD oil. It is easy to lose track. Here is a clear look at what THC oil actually is.
Hash oil, THC oil & cannabis oil
These names usually refer to the same kind of oil, with THC oil being one of the most common terms. The oil is extracted from cannabis and contains a particularly high concentration of the active compound THC. THC is not only used for its intoxicating effect; it is also becoming increasingly relevant in medical settings.
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) are the two best-known cannabinoids
THC oil composition
THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol and is an active compound from the female hemp plant. THC oil is made by extracting the resin of female cannabis with alcohol. THC has a psychoactive effect and is available in Germany only on prescription.
Oils such as hemp oil or CBD oil, on the other hand, contain no THC or only very small amounts. That is why these oils are freely available. To avoid being classified under the German Narcotics Act, however, they must not contain more than 0.2% THC.
THC oil and pain
CBD and THC also play a role in medical use. It helps to know that a marijuana plant contains more than 100 cannabinoids. The human body also has an endocannabinoid system, which is involved in processes such as hormone production and immune-system regulation.
THC oil is said to affect the human body in the following ways:
- anxiety-reducing
- calming
- anti-inflammatory
- relaxing
- pain-relieving
- appetite-stimulating
According to current research, THC may also have an influence on acute brain injury and could be relevant in the context of degenerative diseases. THC oil has long been used in pain therapy, including for cancer patients, and research has examined its potential influence on tumor growth.
Important: Anyone with mental health conditions should never take THC oil without medical supervision.
Making THC oil yourself – is it possible?
Making THC oil yourself
Can you make THC oil yourself? In theory, yes, but it is very involved. You need 99% alcohol and have to work with extreme care. THC oil is not a cannabis oil used for cooking or making hash brownies. It is highly concentrated and is prescription-only for good reason. We therefore advise against making it yourself.
How THC oil is used
Hash oil is taken orally and usually takes effect after around two hours. Pure THC oil has a very unpleasant taste, so it is often taken with juice or food.
It is sometimes also available in capsules, which makes dosing easier. To find the right dose, you should always speak with your doctor. That is another reason why the oil is available only on prescription.
When smoking cannabis, the effect usually sets in faster, often after around 30 minutes.
