What is the story behind CBD cigarettes? What is CBD in the first place? Are CBD cigarettes intoxicating, and can you buy them legally in Germany? What is the difference compared with herbal cigarettes? We have the answers.
What Is CBD?
CBD is short for cannabidiol, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid from female hemp. CBD is discussed in many contexts, including medical research. Even though CBD sounds like a chemical substance, it has a plant-based, natural origin.

Cannabinoids are active chemicals in medical marijuana
Cannabidiol is a non-psychoactive compound found mainly in hemp plants. Hemp is cannabis, but it does not contain large amounts of THC. Instead, hemp crops are bred to contain less than 0.3% THC.
Cannabidiol is one of 113 naturally occurring cannabinoids in cannabis. One reason cannabinoids are widely discussed is their relationship with the endocannabinoid system. While cannabinoids such as cannabidiol occur in plants, the endocannabinoid system is found in every one of our bodies.
Of course, alongside cannabinoids there are also terpenes, which shape much of the plant’s aroma profile.
What Is CBD Associated With?
The big difference compared with conventional joints is that CBD cigarettes do not create intoxication and are not psychoactive. That is why CBD itself is legal. Hemp is often perceived as an intoxicant. But the idea that hemp makes you “high” is mainly connected to the THC it contains. If the THC content of the plant is very low, hemp is not usually associated with intoxication.
Unlike classic joints, hemp-containing cigarettes have a very low amount of the active ingredient THC and more CBD instead.
CBD is often discussed in connection with areas such as:
- relaxed rituals
- pain research
- sleep-related user reports
- anxiety-related user reports
- inflammation research
Alternatives to the CBD Cigarette
In Switzerland, hemp cigarettes with CBD as the active ingredient are legally available. Unfortunately, that is not the case in Germany. CBD, however, is not prohibited per se.
As an alternative to CBD cigarettes, we at Real Leaf also offer herbal cigarettes with the aromas of cannabis terpenes. You can now choose between the flavor varieties Mango Kush, OG Kush, and Pineapple Express.
CBD products such as CBD cigarettes are often discussed around calm rituals and inner restlessness. If you want to go without cigarettes, vaporizing liquid is another option. The taste of liquid is not for everyone, though, so at Real Leaf we have instead enriched nicotine-free herbal cigarettes with different cannabis terpenes.

Summary
CBD cigarettes are not legal in Germany; they are available only in Switzerland. Even so, it is possible to consume CBD legally in Germany, just not in cigarette form. One option is vaporizing CBD liquid in a vaporizer. Our herbal cigarettes with cannabis terpenes offer a tobacco-free aroma ritual in a different direction.
Just take a look around our shop.
And do not forget: as an alternative to CBD cigarettes, there are of course still our classic Real Leaf herbal cigarettes without terpenes.
